Historical development of the port

Development of commerce and arrival of railroad to Dubrovnik there was need for new sea port because Old port didn"t fill standards either by its position either its possibilities for one load port. In the beginning the port was load - passenger and according to that there was built one passenger quay, and the rest of the port was built as  sea port for load ships with lifts for loading and unloading ship goods, also there was terminal for load and unload of rail wagons with which they transported different goods throughout whole Yugoslavia.  The port was specialized for reception and transportation of wood materials, but with further development of the port they built cold storage for reception and storage of easy damageable alimentary products. Also there was built one terminal for reception of the passengers with restaurants and other facilities necessary for passenger transportation. During the last war after days of bombing the cold storage was destroyed completely and passenger terminal had great damages. The port was the only connection with the rest of the world at that time, because Dubrovnik was in complete blockade.
